This gorgeous 100% silk scarf in glorious shades of a desert sunset comes to you from Afghanistan – once considered a vital part of the ancient silk route with a vibrant tradition in silk weaving. Today, sadly, silk weaving has been almost destroyed during the many years of war. Entirely created by women’s enterprises in Afghanistan, the silk is first spun in the villages of Herat Province and then transported to the city of Kabul where it is dyed, woven and designed into these stunning scarves, each with their signature Afghani tassels.
The Serenity Scarf measures 60″ long x 24″ wide and wraps beautifully around your shoulders. It comes in a rich palette of deep rose, with turquoise, rust orange and burgundy stripes. A story card is included.
The Story
This is the story of Nasima, an Afghan woman who had a dream to revive this ancient art form and start her own business. Like many women, Nasima’s husband was killed by the Taliban and she had to find a way to support her 10-member extended family. Nasima’s dream was to start her own business selling silk scarves made of traditional Afghani silk rather than the silk that was otherwise being imported from other countries. She began by scouting the country for the very best silk weavers and meeting with women in remote villages – who were trying to find a way to rebuild their devastated lives. The silk was then brought to Kabul where they were dyed with natural dyes and woven into distinctive contemporary designs, reflecting Afghan traditions.
Today, Nasima’s silk scarf business is thriving – and Nasima’s dream to support other Afghan women, being quietly realized. She has just been elected the vice chair of the Afghan Women’s Business Federation, a coalition of 35 businesswomen’s groups across Afghanistan – high honors to an enterprising woman whose story reflects the spirit of entrepreneurship, resilience and the determination to succeed – under challenging circumstances.
