These handmade dolls, with their endearing expressions, thickly braided hair and colorful embroidered cotton tunics, are created by Burmese mothers who have fled their villages in Burma over the past 10 years and now live in remote refugee camps on the lush Thai-Burma border. The women are skilled embroiderers who have transformed their skills into a doll making enterprise that has today become a thriving enterprise within the confines of the refugee camps.

Each handmade doll measures 16″ in length and will arrive in a traditional embroidered cotton dress. A story card is included.

The Story

Supporting refugee populations is a core aspect of our mission and work – and the Burmese Doll of Compassion a wonderful testament to the creativity and talent of the Karenni women living in a remote refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border. Many of the Karenni refugees are extraordinary weavers and skilled embroiderers and through this initiaitive are offered safe employment and the ability to supplement their family’s income. Today, WEAVE has established 39 nursery schools with over 3,500 pre-school children in three refugee camps in Thailand. Empowerment, self reliance and education are at the heart of their compassionate mission.
