The Darfur Peace Basket has just arrived from Western Darfur, the latest basket created by the weavers at the Women’s Center in Kuttum Camp, one of the largest IDP camps in the area. Striking in its rich color palette of copper, cream, black and spice, the weavers have artfully incorporated their sense of design to create each as a distinctive woven masterpiece.
An expression of the hopes and dreams of the women of Darfur for a peaceful future, this basket is a perfect keepsake for your treasures, makes for a beautiful decorative object in your home and a meaningful gift for your loved ones. Basket measures: 6 1/2″ wide x 4″ deep. A Story Card is always included with your gift.
The Story
Today, more than ever, the people of Darfur need our help! The situation in this region of Sudan is rapidly deteriorating especially with the recent expulsion of 13 humanitarian organizations. We are grateful that our partner, Darfur Peace and Development Organization are still able to operate in the country as one of the only remaining U.S. based, Darfuri-led organizations – and that, for right now, we can continue to support the weavers with this remarkable, ongoing initiative.
The fact that we have been able to receive a large shipment of these Peace Baskets this month (April), under such challenging circumstances, is a minor miracle and a testament to the tireless support we receive on the ground from Darfur Peace and Development Organization who help us with the complex logistics. We now have 68 weavers at the Womens Center busily making these baskets as an expression of their weary defiance in the face of such extreme challenges.
Reports from the Women’s Center highlight the women’s appreciation for this project, not only because they are able to earn money from each basket that they weave but also because they feel appreciated and valued for these artistic creations. They have been seen to dance in the camps to the chant of ” We are not just refugees, we are not just weavers, we are artists!!!!”
Our committment to these artists in Western Darfur is enduring and as long as we can bring these baskets to you we will continue to do so.
