Surprisingly delicate, these stunning chandelier earrings in tiny glass beads in purple, silver and grey reflect the skills and talents of bead artists from the Mayalan Cooperative in the highlands of Northern Guatemala. Left to rebuild their lives after their men disappeared during the civil war in Guatemala, these women have found a new skill in creating these exquisite pieces of jewelry.
The chandelier earrings will be presented in organza bags. A story card is included with your purchase.
The Story
Most of the bead workers of The Mujeres Analizadoras Cooperative in the El Tablon region were left bereaved and widowed after their husbands and sons disappeared during Guatemala’s 30 year long civil war.
This was because of El Tablon’s close proximity to the military barracks close by. Left to rebuild their shattered lives, the women created the artisan cooperative as a means to provide income and support their families. Today, through this initiative, they are experiencing a sense of confidence and well-being.
PURCHASE WITH PURPOSE: Ten percent from your purchase of this lovely bracelet will support primary and middle school children in the cooperative through The Amber Chand Scholarship Fund, in collaboration with our non profit partner, Mercado Global. The scholarships cover the cost of enrollment, transport, supplies and uniforms.
