Tibetan refugees in India are known for their skills as jewelry designers and these earrings are handcrafted by a group of skilled artisans living on the outskirts of New Delhi, India.
The earrings are simple yet elegant – designed with beads that incorporate the rich amber color of copal resin, turquoise and vermilion red. A story card will be included with your purchase.
The Story
Over 100,000 Tibetan refugees have fled Tibet since 1959 when their spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama and many of his followers fled to India to escape a Chinese crackdown. Many of these early refugees put down their roots in agricultural and handcraft settlements throughout India. Even though Tibetans do not have the rights to vote or carry an Indian passport, they are free to lead productive and peaceful lives in these settlements.
Hundreds of Tibetan refugee families live on the outskirts of New Delhi, the crowded bustling capital city of India, where they support themselves at an artisan jewelry workshop. Through the Tibetan Necklace of Strength initiative, your purchase directly supports these families living in one of these settlements and enables them to earn a dignified and meaningful livelihood.
