ABOUT THE ARTISANS

Our bamboo scarves are handwoven by women in a fair trade cooperative in the highlands of Guatemala.  The bamboo is hand spun, dyed (using non-toxic dyes) and woven on traditional back strap looms, using one of the world's most ancient weaving techniques. The cooperative was formed in the 1980's during the genocide in Guatemala and has grown from 17 to 180 members!  It is one of the most successful fair trade cooperatives in Guatemala and has contributed to improving the lives of countless indigenous families.
