Boomerang Batik Salad Servers, Kenya

These gorgeous salad servers are hand carved by talented artisans in a fair trade cooperative in Kenya.  They are crafted out of olive wood using only simple, rudimentary tools.  The handles are made from discarded animal bones which are "batiked" by placing wax on the white bone and then dipping it in a dark brown or black dye, resulting in unique patterns.

Please note:  Each set will be slightly different, both in handle design and color as well as the shade and grain of the wood.

Measures 11" long.

ABOUT THE ARTISANS

These salad servers are handmade in a fair trade cooperative in Kenya comprised of numerous families and villagers who are involved in all aspects of production.  Children are taught the carving skills from a young age, so this tradition has been passed down from generation to generation.  Others in the community paint the products. All are paid fair wage and receive business training skills.

An integral part of the organization's function is to educate the craftspeople on the need for reforestation to enable the products to be available for years to come and offer a sustainable income for generations to come.
